PADDLE THE RED: EXPLORING CUYUNA'S STUNNING MINE LAKES
Crystal clear water, stunning pine tree backdrops, and the chance to glide through history. Cuyuna's mine lakes, formed from reclaimed iron ore pits, offer one of Minnesota's most scenic and unique paddling experiences.

Whether you're kayaking, paddle boarding or swimming, you'll find over 15 beautiful mine lakes in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. Popular launches include Portsmouth, Huntington, and Pennington Mine Lakes, each connected by channels and surrounded by beautiful forest scenery and iron ore cliffs.
These waters are perfect for both beginner and seasoned paddlers. There is minimal boat traffic and unforgettable views. You might spot fish below the surface or hear loons echoing from the shoreline. These mine lakes are the perfect place for a peaceful paddle surrounded by nature.
Paddling Tips:
Rent a kayak or paddle board from Cuyuna Outfitters in Crosby.
Sunrise or sunset paddles offer the least wind and the best lighting and views.
Don't forget a dry bag to hold anything you want to bring with you on your paddle!
When your arms are tired and your soul is full, head back to your cabin at Cuyuna Cabin Collection, just minutes from the mine lakes. Finish the day with a sauna session, sunset by the fire, or a night under the stars. It's the perfect way to unwind and relax after a paddle.
